John Capobianco Custom Heavyweight Trumpet Mouthpiece, Made by Kanstul

$260.00

Custom heavy weight mouthpiece made for San Francisco trumpet player and band leader John Capobianco.

After graduating from high school in the mid-70's, John attended Cal State S.F. and the College of San Mateo, and took private study with legends like Joe Alessi, Chet Baker, Clark Terry, and Dizzy Gillespie among others.

Mr. Capobianco has been featured lead trumpet and soloist with the bands of Russ Morgan, Joe Henderson, Louie Bellson, and has appeared in the live stage productions Stardust and Hoagy. John leads his own jazz ensembles of various sizes, including big bands and combos - and his groups appear at a variety of Bay Area venues, including the San Francisco Opera, Candlestick Park, Yoshi's in Oakland, the San Francisco Jazz Festival and the San Jose Jazz Festival. Currently, John is lead trumpet for the Harry James Orchestra.

John Capobianco has long been involved in jazz education in the Bay Area. From 1984 to 2000, he was an instructor in combo and big band at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. John has taught at Jazz Camp West and the University of the Pacific, and also gives private instruction in trumpet.

A few years ago, John imagined a very dark sounding mouthpiece, dark tone and interesting to look at. Working closely with the custom mouthpiece craftsman at Kanstul they came up with this elegant shape paired with a Schlke 15A cup he was fond of. This one has a conventional no. 27 throat.

Specs:

  • 0.675" Inner diameter cup, similar to the Schilke 15 rim

  • Shallow cup, like Schilke "A"

  • # 27 (or slightly smaller # 28) Throat

  • Unusual and eye-catching heavy weight blank - about 178 g / 6.2 oz.

Dark core, secure slotting, elegant and dare I say, sexy heavy weight blank!
